Frequently Asked Questions From Sawtelle Patients
How far is Wilshire Oral Surgery from Sawtelle?
Our office is at 12300 Wilshire Blvd #326, Los Angeles, CA 90025 — on Wilshire Boulevard, approximately 1.5 miles from the heart of Sawtelle Japantown. Most patients coming from Sawtelle Boulevard or Santa Monica Boulevard can reach us in 5 to 10 minutes by car. Street parking is available on Wilshire, and free validated parking is provided in the building.
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
No referral is required. Many Sawtelle patients come to us directly after noticing a problem or receiving a general recommendation from their dentist. If your dentist has taken recent X-rays or shared records, bringing those to your first appointment can help us plan your care more efficiently.
What sedation options do you offer?
We offer local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia, all administered in-office by our board-certified surgeons. IV sedation is commonly used for wisdom tooth removal, implant placement, and patients with dental anxiety. General anesthesia is available for more complex procedures or patients who prefer to be fully under. Your surgeon will recommend the safest and most appropriate option for your case during the consultation.
How long does recovery take after wisdom tooth removal?
Most patients recover within five to seven days, with peak swelling and discomfort in the first two to three days. Patients receiving IV sedation will need a driver home and should plan to rest for the remainder of that day. We provide detailed post-operative instructions and are available by phone for any questions during recovery.
Does insurance cover oral surgery procedures?
Coverage varies by plan. Many PPO dental plans provide at least partial coverage for medically necessary procedures including wisdom tooth removal, biopsies, and certain bone grafting cases. Dental implants may be partially covered depending on the reason for tooth loss. We review your specific plan before your appointment and provide a full breakdown of expected costs. Visit our insurance and financing page for more information.
Why choose a board-certified oral surgeon over a general dentist?
Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete four to six years of accredited hospital surgical residency training after dental school, including advanced training in anesthesia, complex extractions, implant surgery, jaw reconstruction, and facial trauma. This depth of training matters most for patients with bone loss, anatomical complexity, multiple procedures in one visit, or any case where sedation is required. General dentists can handle straightforward extractions, but cases with greater complexity are best managed by a specialist.
