A thin barrier membrane placed over the defect blocks that fast-growing gum tissue while giving slower-growing bone and periodontal ligament cells the time and space to regenerate. In many cases, we combine the membrane with bone grafting material or platelet-rich fibrin to further support new bone formation. In some cases, we perform GTR at the same time as implant placement, using the membrane to protect a bone graft placed directly around the implant. In others, we recommend GTR first, allowing several months of healing before the implant is placed into the fully regenerated bone.
