A damaged or painful tooth can disrupt everything from your morning coffee to a full night of sleep, and the decision to have it removed often feels heavier than it should. When a tooth can no longer be saved through restorative care, a thoughtfully performed extraction protects the surrounding bone, neighboring teeth, and your long-term oral health.
At Wilshire Oral Surgery and Implant Center, our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Jonathan Shadi and Dr. Saman Vahedi, perform the full range of tooth extractions for patients across West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Century City. As surgical specialists rather than general dentists, we approach every removal with the diagnostic precision and surgical skill these cases deserve, and our range of oral surgery procedures gives patients a single trusted home for advanced care. We focus on the needs of each patient to provide a comfortable experience in a relaxing, modern environment. This page is part of our broader Restorative Dentistry services.
Many teeth can be repaired with fillings, crowns, or root canal therapy, but some reach a point where removal is the healthiest choice. Severe decay, advanced gum disease, fractures below the gum line, infection, and overcrowding are among the most common reasons a tooth is removed. Removing a compromised tooth early often prevents the spread of infection and preserves the bone that supports your smile.
We take a conservative, individualized approach and only recommend removal when it serves your long-term health. If you are dealing with impacted third molars, those cases are handled through our dedicated wisdom teeth removal services, while this page covers all other extractions.
The right technique depends on the position, condition, and root structure of the tooth being removed. Understanding the difference helps you feel prepared for what to expect on the day of your appointment.
A simple extraction treats a tooth that is fully visible above the gum line and can be loosened and lifted with controlled, gentle movement. A surgical extraction is reserved for teeth that are broken at the gum line, have curved or multiple roots, or have not fully erupted, and these cases may require a small incision or sectioning of the tooth for safe removal. Both approaches benefit from advanced imaging and modern surgical methods that reduce trauma to surrounding tissue.
For patients who feel anxious about treatment, our IV sedation and general anesthesia options allow the entire procedure to be completed in comfort. Recovery is typically smooth, and most discomfort is mild and short-lived. One concern patients ask about is dry socket, a painful condition caused when the protective blood clot is lost too early, and a 2024 multicenter study published through the National Library of Medicine examined how surgical trauma and other factors influence the risk of this complication. Our careful technique and detailed aftercare instructions are designed to keep that risk low.
When a tooth is removed, the bone that once supported it can begin to shrink over time, which may affect future treatment options. Planning ahead during the extraction itself protects your candidacy for replacement and helps preserve the natural contours of your jaw.
In many cases, we combine extraction with bone grafting to maintain the socket’s height and width, creating a stable foundation for what comes next. This forward-looking approach is especially valuable for patients considering dental implants, since a well-preserved ridge supports a more predictable and natural-looking result. By coordinating removal and reconstruction under one roof, we save you time and ensure every step is guided by the same surgical team.
Patients throughout West Los Angeles trust our practice because we combine modern surgical technology with a genuinely personal approach. Dr. Shadi and Dr. Vahedi are both Diplomate-level trained oral and maxillofacial surgeons with extensive experience in extractions, implants, anesthesia, and bone grafting, and they rely on advanced 3D imaging and the latest surgical techniques to support faster recovery and reduced discomfort. Our office also offers bilingual care, with Spanish spoken in the office and both doctors fluent in Persian and Farsi, so you can discuss your treatment in the language where you feel most at ease.

Dr Vahedi was great. I had my two sons have their wisdom teeth removed. Both sons 17 and 21 had minor pain after the surgery. Very professional and answered all ur questions. Highly recommend. The staff Stephanie and Andria I think were fantastic, very helpful and answered all ur questions.
Dr. Vahedi removed my 8-year old’s supernumerary tooth yesterday, and so far we are very pleased with the result and the overall process. All the staff were very professional, from the front desk to the nurses to Dr. Vahedi. They helped my daughter feel comfortable in what would otherwise be a very stressful process for a child. Thank you!
I was given a referral from my dentist to see Dr. Shadi. I didn’t know what to expect at first because of where his office was, 23 miles from my home. I was reluctant at first because of the travel distance but after meeting the office and Dr. Shadi for the first time, I had no second thoughts and scheduled my appointment for an Implant. Both the staff and Doctor were very professional. The implant was a success with zero complications. I would truly recommend Wilshire Oral Surgery for your dental needs. Thank you Doc!
Everything was explained. All treatment options. What to expect during procedure and recovery. Staff very helpful. Very clean and modern offices. I would highly recommend
The office gave my daughter an appointment with within a very reasonable time. On day of appointment they saw her on time, explained the procedure and after are in detail. All staff including the dentist were extremely empathetic and supportive of my daughter. Surgeon personally called and followed up with us after she had her wisdom teeth pulled. Everyone was extremely sweet and compassionate to our needs. Will recommend this office to others.
Had all of my wisdom teeth extracted at once here. The cost was affordable (compared to competitors) and the surgery was only around 30 minutes. I opted for PRF which greatly helped the healing process – I healed in about 4-5 days. Can’t recommend them enough, they have such a friendly group of office staff and surgeons.
